Course Evaluations - Assignments & Exams

Student evaluation of learning is a multipurpose tool that aims to improve and assure educational quality.  Improved teaching and student learning are central to educational enhancement. However, use of evaluation data (assignments, exams, forums, & quizzes) for these purposes is less robust than expected.

In counsellor education theoretical knowledge and recall, is not sufficient – student counsellors must to be able to demonstrate adequate counselling capability, at an acceptable standard of competence - meeting the benchmarks required for the profession.  In addition to foundational and practical competence, counsellors must importantly demonstrate reflective competence - demonstrate the ability to integrate performance with understanding so as to show that the learner is able to adapt to changed circumstances appropriately and responsibly. This requirement to personalization, is an important factor in counsellor training, but not easily evaluated by traditional means. The majority of student evaluations of learning are retrospective quantitative course evaluations (exams and assignments). Out of necessity, these are used in counsellor training determine a pass grade, the foundational concept of outcome based training is used throughout to ensure qualitive evolution.

Assignments

The assignment topic and guidelines for the assignment will be given in each module study guide, and discussed in the slide shows.

  • Researching and completing the assignment(s) is important – it is the primary evaluation tool of your knowledge and insight of the coursework, and the main summative assessment.
  • Review the assignment topic and guidelines in the syllabus before starting.
  • Utilize a formal academic writing and the correct citation style – in counselling courses student-counsellors are required to use the APA citation style
  • Please take note of SATS Course Assignment Late Policy:
    ▪ Assignment Due Date is the 27th of the last month of the term
    ▪ The Cut-Off Date is the last day of the term and is non-negotiable
    ▪ According to SATS policy, a -10% penalty per day for late submission is applicable
    ▪ The lowest adjusted grade that will be awarded is 40%
    ▪ One-week extensions will only be considered for applicable legitimate reasons (e.g. submission of a medical note, funerals, personal family crises, etc.)

Module Exam

  • Prepare for the exam by reviewing all the coursework (lectures, notes, readings, postings - you will not be allowed to review the quizzes)
  • Once you open the exam slide show, you must take the exam and finish it in one sitting in the allotted time. You will not be allowed to redo the exam.
  • Please take note that this is not an open book exam. Please do not consult your notes or textbooks while taking the exam. Please be ethical.
  • If you experience technical difficulties (e.g. the internet failing) please email your lecturer and include a screenshot of the problem if you can.

  • Demonstration of underlying abilities
  • Applied to achieve a desired purpose
  • Relates to content, context, and value frameworks
  • The focus is more on the performer than on the task

 

  • Description of the capabilities required within identified roles, functions or learning activities at specified levels of competence.
  • Standards are desired education and training outcomes and their associated assessment criteria

Passing Criteria

Although a % grade is awarded, the course evaluation of the Certificate Program is outcome-based. Student-Counsellors are required to meet the criteria for the critical outcomes desired, demonstrating an adequate capability at an acceptable standard of competence.

  •   To pass counselling courses, you must achieve a grade of 50 per cent. Your grade will be classified as follows:
    • 80–100 per cent: distinction
    • 50–79 per cent: pass
    • 0–49 per cent: fail
    • A subminimum of  40% is required for all subsections.

  •    Your Final Grade will be made up as follows:
    • Completing all the quizzes 10%
    • Participating in online discussion forums 20%
    • Course Exam 15%
    • Course Assignment 55%

Please take note that participation in the discussion forums and completing the Unit Quizzes, are a course requirement and a subtotal of at least 40% are required in each. You will not be allowed to take the exam or submit an assignment if you did not take the quizzes and/or participated in the discussion forums.
